Review of The Sandlot (1993) by James G — 14 May 2014
The Sandlot is one of those movies that can be thrown into "the coolest movie growing up" debate like a pair of pocket jacks in a Texas hold'em game. Simply put it is difficult for anyone growing up in the 1990's not to have seen and enjoyed this movie.
The first act follows a new kid on the block named Smalls to the local baseball diamond. Smalls finds a new best friend in Benny whose the neighborhood good guy. Smalls quickly makes friends with all of the other boys and they do the usual activities such as play baseball, go the pool, and celebrate the Fourth of July.
Each scene is entertaining in its own right. The only thing out of place is the yard behind the baseball field where the occasional homerun is devoured by a large dog referred to as "The Beast".
All is well until Small's stepfather's (Dennis Leary) prize baseball is hit into the Beasts' territory. The Sandlot is a funny yet wholesome trip down memory lane.
