Review of The Sandlot (1993) by John R — 04 Sep 2017
Any boy who played baseball in the 50's and 60's will love this movie. Regardless of what some reviewers may believe, little boys do act a lot like the kids in the movie, and I personally knew boys similar to the ones in the movie.
Although not quite on the same level as the gigantic dog, I can definitely relate to being too scared to retrieve a ball from the backyard of a person believed to be unfriendly (we had two older ladies we called the "witch sisters" whose angry demeanor scared the daylights out of us, so much so that any ball that went in their yard was considered lost).
Admittedly, the Rockwellian feel of the film is at times overdone, but in many ways, the movie is similar in tone to "A Christmas Story", although not as well written (note, however, that its audience score of 89% is higher than the 88% of "A Christmas Story").
Although the movie is not perfect, it is highly entertaining and enjoyable, and passes the "Christmas Story" test of being of being hard to stop watching once you see it on TV, even if you've seen it several times before.
