Review of The Salton Sea (2002) by Timo T — 11 Dec 2009
This movie is alternately soothing and aggressively violent. It switches back and forth from rich tones and reverie to disturbing cruelty.
A couple of the scenes revolve around the notion that the violence is in fact, humorous. I feel they missed the mark a bit there, I found some parts very intrusive. It's a shame because there is so much worth seeing in this film.
But what really surprised me was Val Kilmer's character. His grief and dissociation makes it a very easy and moving performance to watch. Accompany him with an always fantastic Peter Sarsgaard, and the result is some very touching and funny scenes.
