Review of The Saddest Music in the World (2003) by Claire S — 09 Mar 2008
I feel like you just can't go wrong with the premise of a Depression-era contest to perform the saddest music in the world, judged by bitter, legless beer heiress Isabella Rossellini. Maddin revels in the absurdity inherent in performing sadness, the audience openly thirsty for the most sensationalist violence and the schmaltziest Broadway.
In a Heisenberg mood, once sadness has become a theme, the very act of observing it seems to inures us to the suffering of others.
