Review of The Saddest Music in the World (2003) by Ernest K — 19 Mar 2008
There seems to be a recent trend in cinema to create films that imitate the style of classic cinema. with sin city and the good german reviving noir cinema, and kill bill and grindhouse reveling in 70s film-making.
in the saddest music we find something oddly refreshing. the film is shot using poor quality film and aims to look as though it was produced in the golden age of movies. what is wonderful about this though is that it takes the genre and translates it into surrealist cinema, creating a dizzying and amusing tale that is not only visually interesting but is highly satirical.
the plot revolves around a saddest music contest with the end game being to sell more beer, criticizing the capitalist system for making profit out of misery. beautiful, funny and absurd. go see it now!
