Review of The Saddest Music in the World (2003) by Mark U — 11 Jun 2008
This is the 3rd Maddin film I've seen and during this one, I got to considering, you know, to just what degree is his whole project might just be kind of a satisfying but empty gimmick. I concluded that I don't think it is, at all really. The aesthetic he uses is really the only way the stories he wants to tell can be told and can draw the audience inexorably in to their worlds. A lot of the stuff he does is just, I don't know how to put it besides incredibly awesome - Roger Ebert's review is good and I don't want to parrot him, so I recommend it.
By the way, Roger Ebert is a good film critic, despite his ubiquity. He's passionate, bold, and not afraid to tell you what he truly hates or loves. I really appreciate the strength of his opinions; even the spots where I disagree with him are constructive.
