Review of The Saddest Music in the World (2003) by Cheryl D — 04 Jan 2009
One of the quirkiest films I've seen in recent years and yet, I really enjoyed all of its quirks. Mark McKinney plays it not quite comedic, not quite dramatic and Isabella Rossellini is his perfect foil. By the end of the film, I cared about the characters (though none were what I would consider like-able) and all the weird twists and turns to the plot all added up to a very melodramatic over the top climax.
Most of the film is processed in a way to make it seem contemporary to its Depression-era setting -- effective, but it really ups the quirk factor. This movie isn't for everyone, but if you liked Blue Velvet or similar films, I do recommend it.
