Cold War hysteria meets "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World." No wonder, both films were written by William Rose. Silliness abounds. Sure, the satire isn't biting as "Dr. Strangelove'" but director Norman Jewision happily captures the fun with his cast of comedic greats (many of whom appeared in Mad Mad World).
The buffoonery of the island inhabitants is distilled in Paul Ford's performance. Arkin and Reiner are hilarious together. This is the movie Spielberg tried to make ("1941") but failed.
