Review of The Runaways (2010) by Jasmine C — 04 Oct 2010
On one hand you have a biopic on one of the greatest all-female rock groups ever... on the other hand it's a very cliched, stereo-typical tale that you've seen in just about every other rock-and-roll biopic. Sadly, the majority of people will watch this not because of any interest in a band they probably know nothing about but to see Kristen Stewart's turn at Joan Jett, arguably the most famous member of the band, and for Dakota Fanning's more adult-oriented role. Most people will miss Scout Taylor-Compton as Lita Ford, too.
As far as being a movie... I'm not too sure on it. It isn't exactly... good. You know how it ends before it even begins, and as I mentioned the story isn't anything you haven't seen in every other movie of its type. Director Floria Sigismondi definitely took some cues from Soderberg so I give her props for that. Soderberg has a way of capturing the look and feel of the 70s, which this movie does incredibly well. At times, the acting is soft, save for Fanning and Michael Shannon.
I don't really know if there's a proper way to tell this story. All the components are there, I'm just not sure a movie about the band itself was the way to go. Perhaps a biopic on Joan Jett would have been better, but I digress.
