Review of The Runaways (2010) by Jeff H — 15 Oct 2010
Highly interesting story, but not a very good movie. Boringly predictable. The acting is not that good, despite what I'm reading from reviewers. Stewart and Shannon are pretty good, but this isn't Oscar material or anything.
Most of all, it just tries too hard. Fanning tries to hard to be sexy and dangerous without ever achieving it, while the story tries too hard to create tension from situations that never seemed to merit it.
Lita Ford FREAKS OUT about Currie's sexy pictures, as does Jett, despite the fact that they spend half the movie letting the manager tell them to be sexpots. I guess it's supposed to be all about how the image is less important than the music for Joan, but they never tell us this until it's too late, seeing as how she's getting drugged up and sleeping with a 15 year old girl to make her artistic vision known.
This isn't a criticism of Joan Jett's lifestyle choices, but rather that the director wanted the sexy Stewart/Fanning kiss to titillate us dudes rather than actually allowing the higher message to shine through.
