Review of The Runaways (2010) by Jennifer L — 10 Dec 2010
Anyone who thinks this is a good representation of what The Runaways really went through as a band is clearly not a fan. Regardless of the fact that Joan Jett had a big hand in this film, it is nothing to do with the band and more to do with just Cherie Currie.
It should have been called Neon Angel, as was Cherie Curries autobiography. How can it be about The Runaways when it had fictional band members, including a bass player that didn't even get one line.
It was a miserable film with a limp performance from Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart just doing what she does in every other film but with a bit more gravel in her voice. It was so obviously pussy footing around the fact Jackie Fox wanted nothing to do with it, and Joan Jett didn't want to jeopardise her relationship with Kim Fowley and portray him as the exploitative creep he was.
The script was terrible and Marie Currie had more air time than Jett. It was a story limited by legal restrictions and not fit to call a biopic.
