Review of The Runaways (2010) by Abigail S — 16 Feb 2011
I don't think this movie was well written enough to be of interest to non-rock music geeks, (it was also pretty gross), but, for someone like myself, it was super helpful in giving mid-70's LA hard rock a face.
More particularly, it helped me make sense of the rrrriot girl thing, and the look/sound of an all-girl rock band. Before, I thought such a line-up and vibe was to be avoided, but this movie made me reconsider.
And now I think that sort of thing is pretty cool. I listened to their album "Queens of Noise" today and was wowed by the strength of the songwriting and the overall musicianship. ("Hollywood" is my new favorite song!) Those girls really rocked.
