Review of The Runaways (2010) by Steve B — 10 Jan 2012
Disappointing. I really wanted to like this movie, given the music and subject matter (fan of the band, big fan of Joan Jett), but it lacked depth. Decent performances, but inadequate writing made this feel more like an extended music video at times than a feature film.
While the movie's main focus is Cherie (who wrote the book upon which the picture is based), Joan, and their manager, it gave short shrift to the other band members, particularly Lita Ford, who was so important to the band's sound.
Another annoyance was the brief "where are they now" text just before the credits - the type was small and it only mentioned those main three characters: Hey, Floria! There were three other girls in the band! What happened to them (OK, we know where Lita went, but what about the drummer, who started the band with Joan? And the bassist, who was given really no part at all?).
