Review of The Runaways (2010) by Andy E — 27 May 2012
The Runaways, a band of teenaged punk rockers, burst onto the scene and then burn out under the weight of touring obligations, dodgy record sales, personal clashes, and a crazed manager (Michael Shannon).
The bulk of the film's narrative centers on the tenuous bond between Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning). This turns out to be a wise move since both ladies turn in good performances.
I didn't expect much out of this movie since I believe musician biopics are largely cookie-cutter affairs, but The Runaways has its moments. It doesn't exactly give a definitive perspective on its subject matter, but the movie doesn't humiliate itself either.
