The Runaways is essentially a film about the band The Runaways and its main artists Cherie Currie and Joan Jett, but why does it not feel that way? The film recounts the bands origins to what seems like their peak in Japan, with nothing more than the sex, drugs, and alcohol synonymous with rock and roll. The gap between their first international concert as opening acts to their fan infested concert in Japan is almost non-existent. We are left wondering, what was The Runaways career defining moment? Were they unsuccessful in the United States? Why did they only perform overseas? The film then plummets near the ending, coinciding with Cherie Currie's descent from stardom. The bottom line is that fans of The Runaways will not be satisfied with this watered down depiction of the group.

But somehow in this web of confusion, I find the film to be an invigorating and entertaining viewing experience. There is no question that Kristin Stewart carries the film on her shoulders. The role of Joan Jett seems to be created especially for her. She captures the hardcore mentality emphasized by her character in what's possibly the best performance of her career. Dakota Fanning also turns in an excellent performance as Cherie Currie. Breaking away from her child actor persona, Fanning tackles Currie's sexified personality deftly, ensuring her presence in Hollywood for many years to come. The combination of Stewart and Fanning exudes chemistry. The problem with the Runaway isn't the acting or its inability to capture the essence of the 70s and its rock and roll influence; the problem lies within a lackluster script that offers more of a sloppy synopsis than a indepth biopic.
