Review of The Runaways (2010) by Dean M — 17 Dec 2010
I had a huge interest in seeing this due to the subject matter and I was very curious to see how they would handle this project. Unfortunately the whole thing comes off with a pretty big whimper. The actors do everything in their power to keep this interesting (the mannerisms on Kirsten Stewart are actually pretty staggering) but it's the story that lets them down.
It seems like they just took a few significant moments in the history of the band and slopped them all together and hoped it would tell an interesting story. Well....it didn't. It's a choppy story at best that jumps repeatedly with little to no explanation for it.
The whole thing is just a shame b/c there was so much potential with this film, not only with the band but the legendary personalities involved too. But it is just a mess, and they found a way to make one of the most influential punk bands ever downright uninteresting.
It's obvious that kirsten stewart and dakota fanning both poured their heart and souls into making their roles as authentic as possible but the efforts are wasted on this project. Michael Shannon knocks it out of the park as legendary producer Kim Fowley, by far the shining moment of the film.
