"The Runaways" 10 Scale Rating: 6.0 (Decent) ...
Maybe if I liked the band a little more, I would have liked the movie a little more too. Don't get me wrong, I have always liked Lita Ford and Joan Jett as solo artists. I just never cared much for the Runaways as a group.
So, it was up to director Floria Sigismondi to make me interested in a band I mostly find boring. You see, the Runaways don't have the sort of story that is begging to be told. They were a teenage all-girl rock band in the late seventies. A combination of success, alcohol, drugs, and jealousy caused them to flame out. A few of them went on to have successful solo careers. This is pretty much the back story of every band in America.
Having said that, she did keep me somewhat interested. I cared enough about the band to want to see what happened next, and that is saying something.
Lastly, I criticize Kristen Stewart's abilities as an actress pretty frequently. In this film, she was outstanding as Joan Jett. I was absolutely floored by her performance.
