Review of The Runaways (2010) by Julia C — 14 Apr 2012
The Runaways is a truly compelling movie. The notion that it is (based) on a true story adds to the weight. The line "sex, drugs and rock'n'roll" is used in today's society lightly, but this story completely encapsulates the term.
The audience is taken on a journey of fame and fall, with all the good and bad bits in between. There is a sense of naivety this story, these girls had little (or no) direction, they just rocked the "only way" they "knew how".
Kristen Stewart was SUPERB as Joan Jett, I couldn't take my eyes off her. Dakota Fanning was an excellent Cherie Currie (though I would have been interested to see how the film would have transpired had Taylor Momsen got the role), it was great to see Dakota in a totally different role, not her usual (barring a few roles) all american girl role.
This film is cleverly written, incredibly acted and touching. The film goes beyond just being that of "the first all girl rock band". But journeys with young girls who simply grew up too fast.
