I'd say if you're only seeing this for Johnny Depp then be wary I don't think it's entirely going to thrill you in comparison to his work with Jack Sparrow etc. As for me I thoroughly enjoyed it, I know it got poor reviews but I feel the characters are cast perfectly.
The plot itself is not really at all like that of Hunter's novel, and some characters are completely different or they don't exist at all but there's a reason why this is a movie and the book is a book.
The Rum Diary has a good vibe and I loved Michael Rispoli as Sala and Giovanni Ribisi as Moburg.
