Review of The Rum Diary (2011) by Aya V — 14 Jan 2014
Yet another vibrant adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson. Set in Puerto Rico in 1960, Johnny Depp plays a young writer who finds employment at a struggling newspaper. He soon realizes the poverty and corruption of the city; he gets to be friends with both sides of the wire, never knowing whether to become rich and corrupt, or just stick to normality.
This is a wonderful independent film, with Depp at the top of his game. It's all about alcohol, lust, corruption, and everything in between. This is definitely one of the most underrated pictures of the year.
