Review of The Rum Diary (2011) by Jeffrey N — 08 Oct 2014
From what was deemed the "lost" work of Hunter S. Thompson, "The Rum Diary" is Johnny Depp's promise to his hero's later-released, though allegedly one of his earliest-written, novels.
While I haven't read much of Thompson's, most of my exposure being through this Rolling Stone articles (and frankly, I was too young to follow his style), as an adult, I appreciated the unique flavor of the film, both in writing and directing.
Even though it appears to be fictional in nature, it results in building its protagonist into some sort of hero whose adventures begin when he climatically determines his natural place in this "story" is to act as narrator to a cause I'm not sure actually exists.
As a Johnny Depp fan, it's hard for me to find films I can't appreciate him on some level. And given his love for Thompson, it was hard not to view this as an homage. I thoroughly enjoyed the romp from beginning to end.
