Review of The Rules of Attraction (2002) by Dennis B — 03 May 2008
From the title and the teen-idol cast I assumed this was going to be another boring collegiate romantic comedy...however it was much smarter than that, or at the very least it made the attempt at it. Perhaps "The Rules of Stalking" might have been a better title, as it seems that practically everyone in the movie has a mad obsession with someone else, for whom their quest ultimately fails.
I agree with one thing the Facebook reviewer says, Russell Sams absolutely steals the movie in the restaurant scene, I wanted the camera to keep following HIM. In the end, what it comes out to be is a very Victorian romance (unrequited love), set in modern times.
Incidentally, I think the house for the "end of the world party" is the same house that Tony visits in his coma in season six of the Sopranos. Oh, and yeah, I liked it - not as deep as Donnie Darko, but like I said, an A- for effort.
