Review of The Rules of Attraction (2002) by Lauren K — 10 Aug 2008
Did you know that, in 2002, some critics said this movie was literally unwatchable? Well, forget them because this film is amazing. This is BY FAR the most faithful adaptation of an Ellis novel... which may be why a lot of people hate it.
The problem with Ellis is that he doesn't like those silly things called "plots" and instead choses to play with style and form-- starting and ending *this* novel, for example, mid sentence.
With multiple narrators and conflicting perspectives, the way this movie is filmed just blows my mind. Not for the weak of heart or closed of mind, but absolutely beautifully done on all accounts!
