Review of The Rules of Attraction (2002) by Alex E — 21 Dec 2008
A vacuous film about vacuousness, but also something close to brilliant. I can't think of one redeemable aspect of this film's mindset - it's nihilism at its ugliest. But by portraying superficiality in the most superficial of ways (namely pretty, vacant faces and an arsenal of New Wave camera tricks), this is perhaps one of the most faithful novel-to-film adaptations I can recall.
The film is mindlessly entertaining, until you realize you're spending two hours wallowing in an infinite void of humanity. I couldn't begin to explain why I enjoy this movie, but I do just the same.
