Review of The Rules of Attraction (2002) by Julio S — 08 Feb 2009
Ok, concentrating on the content of the movie...the main character is at time sympathetic and then he reminds you he's a lying near-psychotic a$$. The gay guy is, well, typically gay in that he just needs some manmeat in him all the time and his "crush" on Sean is so NOT warranted at all. The girl, typically naive, like all the bad guys for the wrong reasons. To see her in the opening scene getting banged on camera from this naiveté does not help matters at all. I knew the next 120 minutes were not going to be easy.
I went to college, maybe I just wasnt cool, but where were all these parties where girls just danced around topless? really?
Back to the movie, I only wanted to see this due to Sean being Patrick's brother from American Psycho. I had not read this book, but have Psycho and dabbled with 2 other books of Bret Ellis, and I must say it's starting to seem like a broken record of 80's people just doing coke and doing really bad things to women ALL the time. It was funny with American Psycho, because I'm a sicko, but not so much here. Up next for me is Less Than Zero, which I believe has even more of the same. Not sure why Ellis' writing has struck a chord with some, perhaps I should read the books rather than try out the movies, but then why bother if its all the same shite?
