Review of The Rules of Attraction (2002) by Brendan G — 03 Sep 2009
This film is somewhere between a 5 and a 1 but for some very similar reasons. It's a five because the film is about kids who are so into themselves that what they attain is really important to them, and the film reflects this shallowness with shallow ways to get the audiences attention, (i.e. random slow-mo, playing scenes backwards, rapid fire editing.).
But it's also a 1 for the same reason it's a five. It's shallow, but they're nothing to be said here. The film isn't about anything, which was it's purpose, but still that's a horrible purpose.
If I made a film where the people just said, "this film is about nothing" over and over and over again, sure, I accomplished what I set out to do, but the fact of the matter is, what I did was nothing in the end. What I did (as well as Rules of Attraction) was create characters that were shallow, meaningless, with a story that says nothing with probably some interesting editing thrown in.
The editing was the only thing I respected in this movie. And for those of you that like this film all I have to say is this: "No one truely ever knows anyone...".
