Review of The Rules of Attraction (2002) by Zane T — 29 Apr 2011
Roger Avary and Brett Easton Ellis are a match made in narcissistic heaven. They are both so full of themselves. Avary, with his Tarantino stole all my best stuff and claimed it's his, and Ellis, which his I got my books published young and spent the past 20 years being a socialite.
The movie is a mess with only a few good spots. It seems they got a lot of TV actors, Van Der Beek, Jessica Biel and Fred Savage, and cast them in roles where they drink, do drugs, have sex and swear, as almost as if it would be something that would interest us.
It doesn't. It's just another college sex movie set at some New England uppity campus which doesn't seem to exist instead of the minds of preppy writers. Sure, people do party at college, but they also go to class, study, stay up late writing papers, and work odd jobs as waiters and at Wal-Mart to make ends meet.
