Review of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by Jesse O — 12 Sep 2010
A nice film from the bizarre mind of Wes Anderson. I might even like this a little better than The Life Aquatic just because it stresses the importance of family above all else. I always enjoy Anderson's keen eye for humor in characters' dress and his integration of sets with the wardrobe to create a fun anachronistic milieu.
Gene Hackman is easily the star here, but he is ably supported by a balanced cast. The humor is on good form; it may be dark and/or quirky but it is certainly effective. The plot kind of meanders at points and could have done with some trimming, especially in the last half hour or so.
Nonetheless, the film is quite fun and worth a watch.
