Review of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by Dustin G — 21 Sep 2010
Well I have given this multiple viewings and I'm sorry to say I just don't see the brilliance in it that many others do. I love Wes Anderson's films and I honestly think this is his worst one. There are entertaining aspects to it, and the performances are all top notch for sure, but the dryness is a little too dry. And the story is really quite uninteresting, although it does pick up a bit as it goes. By the way, I don't care if they aren't blood relatives, a brother and his adopted sister falling in love with each other, is sick and wrong. But not for this family I guess.
I didn't catch any underlying themes while watching it, though I'm sure there are plenty. And whatever it's a commentary on, if anything, I didn't catch that either. It has a few laughs here and there, and a very Wes Anderson feel, if you're into that, which I usually am. And did I mention the great performances?
