Review of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by Nik B — 10 Oct 2010
Has always been my favorite Wes Anderson movie, but seeing it again shows me that it's really one of the best movies ever. With so many characters, it can seem overwhelming. Especially when each and every character has a story and persona that is so rich that it could fill their own movie. It was if Wes and Owen took the best parts out of seven different scripts, including Dudley's.
And each one's story is different and fascinating, but always grounded in the cornerstones of stroytelling. The need for love, family, home, redemption.
Royal T. is a selfish s.o.b. who, facing financial ruin, homelessness, and the engagement of his long estranged wife, decides to fake an illness to bring his family back together in the house he left 20 years ago. There's nothing else that needs to be said. It's dysfunctional family politics with the highest limit of sanity and biggest swellings of emotions.
