Review of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by Elliott F — 16 Apr 2011
Looking at the 2000s in retrospect, Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums stands as one of the finest comedies of the decade. Gene Hackman is utterly brilliant in his hilarious performance as Royal Tenenbaum, a "dying" patriarch to a family who calls his estranged children, all former child prodigies (Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Luke Wilson), plus an array of other colorful characters, including his wife (Anjelica Huston), her fiancee (Danny Glover), and various other people who, like it or not, are also in his life (Owen Wilson, Bill Murray).
An excellent ensemble piece, and a brilliant character study, and as moving as it is hilarious, The Royal Tenenbaums is a truly winning film.
