Review of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by Thomas P — 13 Sep 2014
A cerebral comedy celebration of the ups and downs of the quirky Tanenbaum family - a true allegory of a fractured family dealing with their individual brokenness, and how they attempt to relate to each other and eventually begin to heal each other.
These quirks both mask and reflect the thriving hearts behind the characters.
Wes Anderson had created a rich familial tapestry of deep characters with shallow-seeming ticks surrounded by perfectly embellished scenery.
It may be easy to get caught up and distracted by the quirks, but they are meant to be dryly humorous, and comment on the bigger picture of every family's quirks and insecurities. The microcosm informs the macrocosm.
It's very much an urban comedy too, NYC to be exact, and reflects some ethnic cultures as well as having a little fun with them too. The Joy shines thru, and only becomes deeper and richer upon reflection and with added viewings.
Rated R for showing boobs, a naked female body on a poster, and Royal dropping a few f-bombs and JCs, otherwise pretty harmless.
4 of 5 rides on a garbage truck.
