Review of The Rover (2014) by Hulon P — 19 Jun 2014
One thing that was interesting to me was a common theme with the book I've been reading, "All Things Shining" by Hubert Dreyfus. He talks about the nihilism David Foster Wallace expressed and the lack of a moral compass and meaning among his contemporaries, and the authors go on to explore that need today. Levy's book "Female Chauvinist Pigs" also exposes the emptiness and meaninglessness and un-sexiness that ultimately belies the gradual pornographication of society, so some interesting parallels, at least to me.
Thought of both books when I saw "The Rover." Couldn't help but think it was.
An artistic expression of these contemporary conditions, especially when---in the middle of this barren, joyless, lonely dog eat dog fight for survival---a song comes on the truck radio that epitomizes the slutty, narcissistic theme and the beat up, nerved up Robert Pattinson character starts singing along. It was perfect juxtaposition.
