Review of The Room (2003) by Rex A — 24 May 2014
You know what? This movie is a masterpiece. I'm not even joking, an actual masterpiece. Sure, it's technically awful, but one of the hallmarks of a good film is the ability to keep its audience immersed in what's going on, and this film succeeds more than any I've ever seen.
The movie creates its own bizarre atmosphere with its horrible acting, hilarious situations, and general tone. The characters are so unintentionally hilarious that we care about everything that happens to them.
Even with awkwardly long recycled sex scenes and periods of tuxedo football, we never get bored, which is truly a wonder. Wiseau's ability to create such a unique environment is addictive in the most wonderful way.
In fact, his direction is some of the most pleasing I've encountered. He clearly loves film more than any director within the past few decades, and he was so excited to make a beautiful work of cinema, which, in my opinion, he did.
Every modern film class needs to mention The Room as a sort of reverse example of cinematic triumph, but cinematic triumph nonetheless. In my top 5 for sure.
