Review of The Room (2003) by Augustina S — 27 Aug 2015
As tempted as I am to give this a scathing review and deride it on its terrible directing, writing and acting, I have to be honest and say what I really feel: this film is bloody brilliant. Of course, I have no doubts that the entertainment value and indeed the cult popularity of 'The Room' is not something purposely engineered by Wiseau, but is rather something that happened by sheer dumb luck and something that no one, especially not Wiseau, could have predicted. I have every reason to believe this was not some kind of satire or deliberately bad piece of work, but was a serious effort on his part to make a dramatic film, and this notion only makes the final product more of a delight to watch and poke fun at.
Simply put, Wiseau is not some dark genius; he is nothing more than a rodeo clown who happened to be so inept that he may have accidentally made the most watchable and hysterical film of the modern age.
So yes, it's terrible, ridiculous and even mind-bogglingly horrendous. It's also nothing short of a cinematic marvel. Wiseau has actually reached a new depth of 'bad' that I've never seen before or since in cinema, and this fact alone makes it worth the watch.
All I can say is, if you haven't seen it, please do. Trust me on this one.
