Review of The Romantics (2010) by Andrea S — 29 Mar 2011
Possibly the worst movie I've ever seen. A wedding in which the groom (Tom) can't decide whether to marry the bride (Lila) or the maid of honor (Laura). Made worse by the fact that everyone is supposed to have gone to Yale together, so there is a lot of angst about whether or not they are all living up to their self-perceived potential. Sigh.
Tom, the groom, is so vaguely drawn that it's best to think of him as a blank mirror through which Lila and Laura admire themselves. Although Lila is clearly meant to be the demon and Laura to be Tom's "one true love," both characters come across as so entitled and demanding that I was left siding with Tom at the end of the movie. If those were my two choices, I wouldn't be sure if I would pick either of them, either.
At the same time, it's uncertain what these women find worth fighting for in Tom, apart from his resume, which is frequently recited.
And then, of course, the ending is ludicrous, but to be fair, I only got that far because I was watching this on a plane and I had already watched the other movies. Don't bother unless you're in similar circumstances.
