A film for twenty-somethings who want to see films that make them feel better about their own selfish and self-centered existence. "The Romantics" features a cast of horrible people acting horribly and tells us that being like them isn't so bad.
Films like "The Romantics" work on the flawed premise that even when we are acting selfishly and abominably, it is merely a testament to the beautiful complexity that is the human spirit. As such it is always excusable and seems to follow the logical pattern of: to err is human and to cheat is to err; ergo to cheat is human. And who can blame someone for being human? After all, humanity is complex and beautiful, lest we forget...
I have a feeling that The Romantics ought to grow-up. And fast...
