Review of The Rock (1996) by David G — 23 Jan 2010
A distinctly average (I'm tempted to say mediocre but that would be too harsh) action flick from the one and only Michael Bay, and as such it's naturally full of his traits - overblown action (including action that serves no purpose and is merely an excuse for mayhem - the car chase through the streets of San Francisco being the prime example), lame humour (the barber, the guy on the tram) and general stupidity (the ridiculous green golf ball poison gas rockets)! It's certainly a watchable movie - Ed Harris, David Morse, William Forsythe and Michael Biehn do their job of reminding us that we're on Planet Earth every now and again and the show-stealing Sean Connery is the coolest cat in town by a mile! Even the shamelessly overacting Nic Cage is a laugh.
Tony Todd, John C. McGinley, Claire Forlani, Raymond Cruz, Xander Berkeley... pretty good cast in general really. Some really cool scenes too such as the SEAL team massacre. The Rock may be loud, flashy and so stupid it hurts, showcasing Michael Bay's infamous style to a tee, but the cast - especially Connery - is great and as a late night no-brainer it certainly deserves your consideration.
