Review of The Rock (1996) by Jordan T — 05 Feb 2010
It's funny to compare this movie to Bay's recent Transformers 2. You see a lot of Bay's signature elements in play here, but they are scaled far back and don't dominate the movie. In Transformers 2, Michael Bay bleeds over every inch of the script.
The Rock succeeds for several reasons: the cast, including Sean Connery, Nick Cage, and Ed Harris, and it builds to its climax with, yes, many action scenes, but they are action scenes that make sense.
There is logic and reason and you understand why things are happening (unlike Trannies, Too). It actually keeps you invested in it. Plus, Sean Connery is a badass.
