Review of The Rock (1996) by Deb S — 14 Feb 2010
Ed Harris plays a disgruntled Marine who holds Alcatraz hostage and only Biochemist Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery (the only resident of the prison to escape) can save its hostages. What makes this different from other films is that the actors were superb and there are some great one-liners. A fun movie with non stop action sequences. The movie is well paced and director Michael Bay packs this movie with a lot of interesting shots and knows just when to slow down the pace and when to speed it back up.
Sean Connery: "Well, it's certainly more enjoyable than my average day... reading philosophy, avoiding gang rape in the washrooms... though, it's less of a problem these days. Maybe I'm losing my sex appeal.".
William Forsythe: "So, you held this guy without trial his whole life. No wonder he's pissed.".
Ed Harris: "Ladies and gentlemen, you're being detained against your will, and for that I apologize. It is not our intention in any way to harm you, You will not be detained one minute longer than is necessary for us to complete our mission.".
Nicholas Cage: "You're not leaving! There's a madman in there with his hand on a... ON A BUTTON!".
