Review of The Rock (1996) by Tom B — 13 Nov 2010
This was an action-adventure experience of the highest order for us here in Testosterone Town. Truth is, it's an immaculate beast of a script and story, but the big surprise at last night's re-viewing were the numerous occasions we witnessed beautiful shots and compositions within the swift-cutting narrative.
The location of The Rock was never better served. And amidst it all, macho-glory laughs galore, with tongue often well-placed, and camp rhetoric running high, yes, from both camps, and the performance chops flying like ginsu knives in the hands of a master samurai chef.
This earns a place in the heart of the Inner Boyscouts Within. A few extra pleasures include Cage not over-the-top but earnest, Connery deadpan and over-the-top and not as nasty as I prefer him but nasty enough to swear foul, and Ed Harris re-visiting some of the insanity he originated in Walker for a reprise of a nutty-American-Military-Leader.
The outlandishly comedic pathos of marines killing marines to the swelling chords of Hans Zimmer is delicious. And all in the service of truth: life is glorious fun.
