Review of The Rock (1996) by Skyler I — 01 Jul 2011
You're probably not gonna believe this, but this is a Michael Bay movie that doesn't suck. No, seriously. It's actually pretty good. It's got an interesting premise, some very humorous moments ("I guess I'm losing my sex appeal" says Sean Connery after explaining he doesn't really have to worry about being raped in the prison shower anymore), and really good action, though the car chase in the middle of the film felt extremely forced.
Turns out it was Michael Bay's idea, not the writers, to include it, which really explains everything. I'm also pretty sure this is the film that prompted Nicolas Cage to appear primarily in action films, so it definitely deserves scorn for that, but as far as action films go, this is one of the best thanks to its quick pacing, good acting and explosive action sequences, even if it does have some bad dialogue at points.
