Review of The Rock (1996) by Dave H — 14 Sep 2012
Not necessarily a classic action film, but a hugely fun one. Most of that is due to the perfs. Connery has never been cooler, and Cage has never been "Cageier" - his "gee-whiz" and "a-hole" ticks are classic nutty OTT Cage, he's a riot.
John Spencer is great as well. There's a bit too much dick-swinging, but that's Michael Bay for you. This is one of his better, slicker efforts. The script itself lacks inherent suspense, but Bay's hyper editing and swooping cameras generate a frantic pace.
Almost better than the leads' chemistry is the exterior location work - especially on the island - really definitive photography. "Welcome to the Rock", indeed.
