Review of The Rock (1996) by James W — 20 Nov 2013
There is nothing small about this movie, it's huge, from the explosions to the car chases and large scale action scenes, The Rock crushes the competition and stands out as one of the biggest and best action movies of the 90's.
Nicolas Cage is good fun to watch opposite Sean Connery, who plays a bad guy that is the only man to ever escape Alcatraz, but the two are teamed together to infiltrate the famous prison to stop a maniac Marine General from detonating poison gas missiles over San Francisco.
The story stays at that, there isn't much construction or development but within that small frame of a narrative the action is blistering, Bay's sunburnt glossy shots look stunning as car crash and bullets spray.
Ed Harris is a menacing bad guy, there's no polite conversations with his character it's all shoot first ask questions never. Solid fun but rather predictable, The Rock is an energetic movie that like most other Bay flicks never lets up, the pace rockets.
