Review of The Road to El Dorado (2000) by Aidan Q — 05 Dec 2012
Sweet and funny, this film has no historical accuracy but that doesn't prevent an audience from enjoying it.
The score and songs are hilarious and often catchy and towards the end heartbreaking.
. As for Miguel and Tulio, the voice acting is superb. Some find their characters 2 dimensional, however they do flesh out quite quickly during the movie- they definitely have a friendship you believe in from the off.
The Chief and Tzekel-kan are somewhat less enjoyable characters, simply because their personalities do not have the screen time to develop fully, but their obvious tension from the beginning does give their relationship credibility.
The animation is wonderful. Vibrant and full of colour. Nothing new maybe but still beautiful to look at.
Having discovered this film in my teen years rather than it being a childhood classic for me, I can see why some adults may have found it flat, but honestly the rotten rating isn't quite fair.
Watch this film with your kids, they will laugh and enjoy the animation and the con (and the horse, Altivo is a gem) and you adults can suspend your disbelief for a moment and enjoy it for what it is- lighthearted and funny. Put it this way, it's a film I can happily watch with my 10 year old brother and he loves it, I'd watch it with my Grandma too.
