Review of The Road to El Dorado (2000) by Carol H — 28 Jun 2013
I always believed that DreamWorks Animation went through three different stages during their almost twenty year run. "The Road to El Dorado" belonged in the first stage; the hand-drawn animation stage which began with "The Prince of Egypt".
The stages that followed were the bad CGI stage (beginning with "Antz") and the current good CGI stage (beginning with "Kung Fu Panda"). I always thought that their infamous, past formulas originated from the middle stage.
But I was wrong. Even their non-CGI films share such groan-worthy traits as lazy pop culture references, celebrities who are just there for the sake of star power, and an unclear target audience.
