Review of The River Wild (1994) by Joe B — 07 Sep 2009
Go Meryl! A movie made with all of the 90's sensitivities. A fractured family takes a vacation down a wild river...river is a metaphor for their current state. It seems after after rocky patch of the river there is some calm after. Throw in a couple of bank robbers who force the family to carry them further downstream and you have an action film on your hands. This was around the time that Meryl Streep began her streak of "I'm a friggin' Oscar winner...I make good movies...I can now make whatever movie I want"...and she did! That's why she works in pretty much any film she does. She doesn't take herself so seriously that she loses the love for filmmaking. I'm sure she saw this and was like..."River rafting? Why NOT? I just was a repressed farmwife in Bridges of Madison County...I want to play a tough gal".
The film has a lot of pedigree in the acting department and also the tech side. Great cinematography, great score, tight direction. If it's all a little ho-hum now...I remember seeing it in the theaters and being on the edge of my 14 year old seat.
