Review of The Rite (2011) by Charlie S — 16 Aug 2011
It had a fairly strong first half, but the ending fell below standards. What was intriguing about the film was the ambiguous nature of the story and the relationship dynamic between a priest on the verge of atheism and an experienced priest/exorcist who has seen true evil.
I think if they would have kept this going throughout, it would have been much better, but the film fell into Hollywood predictability. I literally called the ending out loud, 40 minutes before it happened.
It also should not be classified as 'horror'. It had a couple 'gotcha' moments, and it was suspenseful, but definitely not horror. I do give props to Anthony Hopkins for a great performance.
Colin O'Donoghue was pretty good - he looks so much like Michael Fassbender. Also, for an almost two hour film, it went by surprisingly fast.
