Review of The Rite (2011) by John M — 28 Oct 2011
One worthwhile performance in an otherwise completely skippable movie. So a young man (Colin O'Donoghue) is at the crossroads of his life, and for reasons not all that well explained, he decides to stop being a mortician and to become a priest.
It doesn't quite stick, but he gets referred to an exorcist (Anthony Hopkins) because it could be a better fit for him. I am somewhat of the mindset that once you've seen one exorcist movie, you've kind of seen them all.
This one is so boring and slow-paced, though. It's a thriller that doesn't thrill and a horror movie that doesn't scare, with the exception of a handful of jump scares, and even those are telegraphed a mile away (you know something's up whenever it gets unnaturally quiet).
The one, sole saving grace of this movie is Anthony Hopkins chewing up scenery, so the movie is not a complete waste. The man they got to play opposite of him to lead, Colin O'Donoghue, my GOD, he's one of the worst actors I've seen all year.
He has it doubly bad in that his part is written to make him bland, generic and completely lacking in personality, but there's also the fact that there are cats in this movie that outact him. Whenever Hopkins isn't onscreen, your interest will drop like a stone, and there's not much reason to see this movie unless you love exorcist movies or are just a die hard Anthony Hopkins fan.
