Review of The Rite (2011) by Jason U — 31 Mar 2013
As a non believer of all things religious I went into this movie with very doubtful thoughts & filled with trepidation as to any enjoyment watching this film. Despite my thoughts on religion this was an enjoyable watch with an expected brilliant performance from Anthony Hopkins.
His performance probably raises the bar & without him this movie will probably be more of a miss than a hit. You can't help think he's brought a bit of his greatest character, Hannibal Lector, into this as he's possessed by a rather nasty demon.
In a nutshell this is The Exorcist for the 21st Century but without the projectile pea & ham soup & the profanity which would had made a sailor blush. The twirling heads are missing as well but there's plenty of painful twisting of body parts to keep the squeamish happy! Hopkins plays a veteran priest/exorcist who tutors a sceptical young priest, who is also questioning his own faith & grace to fulfil his role as one of God's servants.
Hopkins guides the young doubter through the dangerous art of exorcism but they both end up getting a little too close to the forces of evil in the process.
